The American Music Awards (AMA) is an annual American music awards show, usually held in the fall, created by Dick Clark in 1973 for ABC after the network’s contract to broadcast the Grammy Awards was terminated. It is produced by MRC Live & Alternative.

Dick Clark Productions was added in the fall of 2021. From 1973 to 2005, winners were selected by members of the music industry in nominations, based on business performance, such as sales and distribution. Since 2006, public and fan voting, who can vote through the AMA website, has determined the winners.

Arrangement

Dick Clark created the AMAs in 1973 to win the Grammy Awards when the show moved that year to Nashville, Tennessee, leading CBS (which has hosted all Grammy shows since then) to restart the Grammy broadcasts after its first two in 1971 and 1972.

In 2014, the American network Telemundo acquired the production rights to the Spanish-language version of the American Music Awards and launched the Latin American Music Awards in 2015. Since 2006, the winners have been decided by a vote of the public and fans, who can vote through the AMA’s website.

From its inception in 1973 to 2002, the AMAs were held from mid-January to late January but were moved to November (usually the Sunday before Thanksgiving) beginning in 2003 to avoid competing with other shows. Between 2012 and 2014, as part of a marketing strategy for Samsung, the American Music Awards used the covers of Samsung Galaxy smartphones instead of envelopes to reveal the winners. The magnetic cover on each phone kept the picture of the winner of the book private until it was opened.

Considered the world’s biggest awards show, the AMAs will air from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 20, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Fan voting is now open via voteamas.com and Twitter, except for Favorite K-Pop Artist, which will open on November 1.
